You can’t really dance without a partner, so two of Canada’s oldest community concert bands are turning that energetic image into a fun evening of lively and lyrical music for the whole family.

Conductor Trevor Wagler and the Waterloo Concert Band (founded 1858) with special guests, Dave Davidson and the Kitchener Musical Society Band (founded 1876) come together at:

Grandview Baptist Church -- 250 Old Chicopee Drive, Kitchener -- on Saturday, November 7, 2009.

With each band taking on half the program, listeners will be treated to an international buffet of dance-inspired delights from the folk, classical, jazz, swing, theatre and novelty traditions of North and South America, Europe, and the British Isles. 

Both conductors continue in a long line of outstanding musicians who’ve taken up the baton of each group while maintaining busy professional careers of their own; each believes that community concert bands continue to be as vital a cultural resource as they were back in the 1800s.   

“I'm very pleased to see that our two bands from sister cities are so eager to play together. This project has picked up momentum right from the start, and I'm sure it will be a great success all around," noted Wagler of the WCB.

“I’m a huge advocate of community music-making,” added the KMSB’s Davidson, “so I leapt at the opportunity for us to work together. It's not often that members of different bands get to hear each other perform.”

Both bands average about four-dozen keen amateur musicians, ranging from high school students to senior citizens, and rehearse once a week. Neither requires auditions, but members should be able to play at Ontario secondary school graduate standards or beyond. They keep busy all season long with a varied mix of formal and informal performances throughout the Region. To find out more, visit the band websites:
